Scandinavia is home to several amazing libraries that not only look extremely impressive but provide a central hub for the local communities. Located in Oslo, Norway, the Biblo Toyen library, built in 2015, was created solely for children aged between 10 and 15 to act as a fun learning space where they can spend time in between school and home life. Designed and constructed by Aat Vos and Damian Williams, the project’s goal was to create a traditional Norwegian style house, filled with history and character to inspire children to learn and socialise.
Aat Vos stated: “I wanted to design a space that allowed children to float away into fascination, whilst also keeping up with the constant shift of their interest.’’
His vision was achieved by using shapes, textures, lighting, and colour to meet the libraries motto of “Keep yourself awake.”
Biblo Toyen boasts striking visuals and unexpected props to keep children engaged and engrossed in the space. From floating ski lift seating, to wheelbarrow and barber chairs and pillow filled submarine inspired corners; the options to allow children to let their minds flow are endless.
The Biblo Toyen library encourages its young patrons to do more than just read. With writer meetings, cookery classes, film screenings, and various workshops, the library is a fantastic social and learning spot that allows children to be inspired.
With a flying drone scanning and locating books in the library, along with all its other creative flares, it’s no surprise that the Biblo Toyen won library of the year in 2017 as well as being shortlisted for the best new library in 2018.
