It’s nearly that time of year again when school’s out and parents are frantically searching for ways to get the littlies away from screens without having to beseech the bank manager for a loan to fund it!
Don’t overlook the local library for a solution that will take children on adventures beyond their wildest dreams where they can fight dragons, sail pirate ships, hang out with the cool kids, solve mysteries, cast spells and win wars. It won’t cost a penny, will help them with their academic achievements (but don’t tell them that bit), give them something to either do with their parents/carers or certainly talk about, and distract them from online gaming or taking selfies. Libraries are great places for children to discover reading for pleasure and there is no better time to do this than during the long summer holidays.
The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. Children sign up at their local library, then read six library books of their choice to complete the Challenge. There are exclusive rewards to collect along the way, and it’s free to take part! Designed for children between the ages of 4 and 11, last year 699,076 children took part in libraries across the UK.
Every year the Challenge has a new theme. The Summer Reading Challenge 2019 theme is Space Chase, an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Launching in Scottish libraries on Saturday 22 June 2019, and in England and Wales on Saturday 13 July 2019.
Schemes like the Reading Challenge don’t just benefit primary school children, young people can also get involved by volunteering in libraries to help children read and talk about the books they are reading. Increasing the footfall of public libraries is important for their future, and the success of schemes like Space Chase could ensure new and devoted patronage from the local community. Freeing up staff time through library technology can increase librarian and customer interaction, encouraging clientele to come back and use more of the library’s facilities.
