How are Libraries in Florida Staying Connected?
Discover important library initiatives on offer from libraries across Florida and learn the importance of #stayingconnected.
As new Florida Library Association members, D-Tech has been helping libraries across the state to level-up their technology offering and provide a more advanced service to their patrons.
In the process, we have seen and heard of libraries implementing fantastic initiatives to stay connected to their communities. We would therefore like to dedicate this blog to promoting some fantastic initiatives from libraries across the state.
What Initiatives are on Offer?
1. FREE POOL DAYS
Glen Ridge Library and Glen Ridge community pool have partnered to offer library patrons free access to the pool on a few weekends over the summer.
2. AUTISM-FRIENDLY LIBRARY
The Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) reached out to the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD) to form a partnership and do more for their autistic and neurodiverse patrons.
The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities created an Autism Friendly initiative to assist community partners in providing a “welcoming, compassionate and nonjudgmental environment for individuals with ASD or related disabilities.”
Following implementation of their recommendations in Miami-Dade public libraries,UM-NSU CARD staff conducted a walkthrough of the library branches to assess “appropriate accommodations and a welcoming environment.” This assessment resulted in MDPLS’s receipt of the Autism Friendly Partner award.

3.SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM
The Treasure Coast Food Bank has partnered with libraries across the state to provide children with nutritious meals. The Zora Neale Hurston Library on Avenue D in Fort Pierce, for example, has been a feeding site for four years. About 10-20 kids come every day for breakfast and an afternoon snack.
TSenior librarian Kathleen Flynn said. ”In Indian River, the school district provides the Boys & Girls Clubs with about 95 free lunches delivered daily. Less than half the 170 kids who come to the club bring their own lunches from home.”

4. FREE ANIMAL ADOPTION
Lake County Library System (LCLS) and Lake County Florida Animal Shelter formed a partnership. Library cardholders were able to adopt any animal, such as cats, dogs or pigs, from the shelter, with adoption fees waived.

5. VISIT FLORIDA STATE PARKS FOR FREE WITH A LIBRARY CARD
Floridians looking for an inexpensive way to get a dose of the great outdoors should check out the Real Florida Reader Day Pass.The no-cost pass, available to those with a public library provides free park admission to Florida’s State Parks.
Florida has 175 state parks that showcase the state’s natural and cultural resources. With the Real Florida Reader Pass, you can continue your learning adventure while enjoying time exploring new places.Passes are valid until September 12.
